The Sacrament of Holy Orders dates back to Christ and His apostles, whom He entrusted to continue His mission. The sacrament preserves the continuity of the Church.
According to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, those who receive the sacrament – a deacon, priest or bishop – are consecrated in Christ’s name “to feed the Church by the word and grace of God.”
We believe all Catholics are called to a common priesthood of the faithful. Laypersons play an integral role in the mission of the Church and are called through Baptism and Confirmation to carry out Christ’s work.
“And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
–Matthew 16:18
